Bureau of Statistics was established in 1971 as Statistical Section of Planning and Development Department. The journey from inception to present is long exhibiting consistent efforts. With fewer resources available at that time the organization put in place limited staff headed by Assistant Director to produce data covering few sectors. Over time the organization continually stepped up its efforts and graduated from a section to Bureau of Statistics headed by Director bringing substantial improvement in the institutional capacity and performance.
The post of Director was created in 1975 with some additional staff followed by the declaration of BOS as an attached department of Planning and Development Department (1987) and establishment of field offices at Abbottabad and Dera Ismail Khan in 1987.
Currently BOS has 47 technical and 44 non-technical staff members working in various sections and its camp offices. With a view to enhance the data storage facility, update information with much ease and ensure timely provision of data to users the need for automation of data with application of the tools of Information Technology was essentially felt. The BOS in this backdrop started work on the development of Management Information System (MIS) back in 2009 and a plank of such initiative is the hosting of BOS website that has been offering a momentous facility to data users to get prompt access to information and statistical reports and make use of available data in their respective fields of work. With the web facility put in place a considerable progress has been made in disseminating the publications to relatively greater number of data users.
BOS established a library containing a variety of publications and books on wide-ranging subjects. Some of the data have been made available in soft version supporting data users to harness the wealth of information. It is equally notable that the staff is conveniently able to retrieve stored information for official consumption on and off.
The application of informed decision-making has surged across the globe with the advent of IT. In this context, improvement in the statistical capabilities of data producers has become inevitable to complement efforts geared toward improving coverage and quality of data in tandem with the rising usage of data. In continuity of efforts directed at capacity development, concerned BOS staff members were trained as master trainers. BOS trainers organized a number of training events for staff of provincial governments, district governments and enumerators from time to time. The latest in the series of the training event concerned with the application of DevInfo in accessing and storing data as planning tool which trained staff of district governments of select districts in 2013. The staff of BOS also participated in a number of national and international short training courses.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Development Statistics and District-wise Socio-Economic Indicators are annual publications of BOS, which are being published since 1980 and 1992 respectively providing significant data on demographic, social and economic dimensions etc. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Figures getting published since 1992 is another annual publication of BOS that provides basic data at a glance. The Monthly Survey of Industrial Production & Employment is released since 1976 and the Monthly Price Report is in vogue since 1984. From time to time, the organization also releases adhoc publications depending upon the availability of resources and need.
Since its inception the Bureau of Statistics has been striving to add value to the presentation of data. Given below is the list of important BOS publications:
